Ester Boserup (1910-1999) Copenhagen, Denmark. She graduated from the University of Copenhagen in theoretical economics. Research work started at the United Nations and then she became a consultant and independent researcher.

Ester Boserups theory, presented in her book The external image image.jpgConditions of Agricultural Growth: The Economics of Agrarian Change under Population Pressure (1965) argues that an increase in population will result in a constant demand for more food. This constant demand for food and supplies will result in new technologies that allow faster crops and food production. This way, developing economies can keep up with the increasing population without facing food shortages.

Boserup points out the existence of a proportional increase between population and food demand: +population = +more food demand. This results in new technologies.

Demand for more food causes this to happen:

Case Study: Mexico
'The Green Evolution' (1960's)
The green revolution was a movement that started in Mexico with the purpose of producing more food for a growing population.
It then spread world wide and many foundations were created. (e.g: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre)
